At Crown Hills this year we are making some changes to homework in Years 7, 8 & 9 for all subjects except English, Maths and MFL in Year 9. Instead of doing homework on a weekly basis, students will be set a series of extended learning projects, usually lasting for 2 weeks. Each project will look at one subject area but will also try to develop other learning skills such as research, presentation, planning etc.
All the resources for each project, including differentiated resources where applicable, will be available through the school website. There will also be a timetable of when projects are scheduled to be completed. In addition, subject areas will run sessions at lunchtime or after school where students can go to receive help or do research.
Students will be credited for completing projects and extra credits will be awarded for projects which show high effort levels. There will also be sanctions applied to students who do not complete a project. Maths and English will continue to set homework on a weekly basis as will MFL in Year 9.
We hope these changes will increase the purpose of homework by:
- Allowing greater parental involvement through knowing which homework is being set and when it is due for completion
- Allowing students to complete tasks in a more supported way through both parental support and resource access and in-school focused teacher support
- Allowing a greater depth of study with flexibility to allow students to study areas which are of more interest to themselves
- Allowing students to develop skills as well as knowledge which will further support the transition to coursework at KS4
If you have any questions about these changes, please do not hesitate to contact us.
