  Sports Day 2009
sd

The sun shone on Crown Hills on June 23rd, the day chosen for the annual Sports Day. The morning ran smoothly. Field events and 800 metres came first and all augured well for the afternoon’s track events. Sprints events started the proceedings after lunch. With all the razzmatazz of an American football match, the college band burst into life between races, and the carnival atmosphere was enjoyed by everyone.

Science Enterprise

The Enterprise took place e in the college hall, which served as large ‘chemical factory’. Students were encouraged to make their own product, sell it for profit and then repeat the process to make more money. The couple who made the most profit at the end of the day was declared the winner.

National Poetry Day

npd

On Thursday, October 8th 2009, students and staff at the college gathered in the Library to celebrate National Poetry Day by reading aloud some of their favourite poems and even trying their hand at writing a few of their own. The results of some of their efforts will be published in the December Newsletter.

Happy Puzzle Company Challenge Day

“Fun", "exciting", "good experience", "we could see how well our brain was working", "team working", "kept us alert", "enterprising".  These are just some of the comments that Year 7 had about the Happy Puzzle Company Challenge Day on 7th Oct.  Students progressed through a number of puzzles and challenges to work together to problem solve and have fun.  A very worthwhile event!

Students debate violent video games in competition at English Martyrs Catholic School
db
Adam Mohamed and Sejal Odedra, both in 11C, proudly represented Crown Hills in a prestigious debating competition, run by the English Speaking Union. The students argued very well against a team from Madani High School and were praised for their quick thinking and speaking skills by the judges. Mr. East said: "Debating is a difficult skill. It requires quick thinking, knowledge and most importantly great confidence. Adam and Sejal were a huge credit to Crown Hills and put their case across very strongly. Congratulations to both of them.”

"I think I was far more nervous than they were, according to Mrs. Lawrence I was mouthing each word of their speech, but I didn’t need to worry as they were fabulous,” added Miss Marsh.

Mrs. Lawrence and Mr Seedat also attended the competition, held at English Martyrs Catholic School, to cheer on the debaters. Thanks also go to Hasan Lambat (10L), Aisha Razaq (10L) and Mohamed Mohamud (11C) for their support on the night.
“It was a great experience that will definitely prove to be useful in the future,” said Sejal. “Debating has improved my confidence and speaking skills so much and I enjoy arguing so it’s perfect!”
“We’ve improved so much since Year 10,” added Adam. “I can use the experience on my college applications so it’s been useful as well as great fun.”

Debate Club is open to all students in Years 9, 10 and 11. Room 8. Monday lunchtimes.

U 14 Cricket Cup Final v Leicester Grammar School - April 2008

On a sunny Spring afternoon in April, our Under 14 boys played the long-awaited Cup Final, held over from last season, several rain-interrupted attempts having  been  abandoned. The trophy was shared over the Winter until the outcome could be decided in April.
Crown Hills batted first and made a creditable 88 runs in 30 overs. LGS made a poor start to their innings and slumped to 15 for 3; the middle order batsmen rallied to set up an exciting finish and The Grammar School eventually won with 89 for 9 with one over to spare. Well done Crown Hills for a very close and sportsman-like match.

Crown Hills Students ’Dig In’ To Improve the Environment

envo

Five Crown Hills students have been praised for their work to help improve a Leicestershire beauty spot. Students planted fruit trees in the Orchard Nature Reserve in Anstey. Gavin Fletcher, Senior Conservation Officer at ‘Ground Work Leicester said the work done with Crown Hills over a six month period was “very intense” and designed to teach young people more about nature and the environment as well as give them the opportunity to learn new skills.

School Changes

They say that things are never the same when you go back. That was certainly the case for ex-Crown Hills student, Robert Dixon, when he visited the college in September. Robert left Crown Hills in 1970 and eventually moved across the city to the New Parks area where he has lived since. Robert was adept at pointing out the rooms he remembered, what the room was used for and which teacher taught there. He was amazed at how the school had grown and the facilities we now provide, in particular, all the computers to be found in most of the class rooms. Obviously, all the original teachers that taught him have long since retired but he remembered many of them with great affection.

Slavery Project at New Walk Museum

slav Following on from their year 8 success last term in the ‘Slavery and Poetry’ project at the Abbey Pumping Station, three year 9 students, and members of their families, visited the New Walk Museum in October to continue the theme. Students were delighted to find a lot of last year’s poetry on public display, bringing much credit to them, and the college.
Working alongside either a poet or an actress for the day, each Crown Hills ‘family’ produced an “excellent” piece of moving and thoughtful poetry and was rewarded with a WH Smith Gift Voucher.

Anyone wishing to see the work produced will be pleased to know that the museum will soon return the poems for display on the Crown Hills campus.

SPLAT ‘07

Circus skills involving hoops, balls, feathers and unicycles conjure up a picture of fun-filled activity under the Big Top. Although not under canvas, but back by popular demand after last year’s resounding success, the circus skills company, SPLAT, returned this month, not just to entertain but to train year 7s in the art of juggling and performing. The benefits of this kind of ‘brain training’ can be immense and impact on all areas of the curriculum, both academic and practical. The sight of friends wobbling around, seemingly out of control on a unicycle or pair of stilts, is a great leveler, and it is not unusual for the normally quiet student to shine as success breeds confidence and a new-

found ability to perform in front of others. An altogether worthwhile experience and one which we hope to repeat for many years. Well done to all those who took part.

Holidays? No Time To Relax!

lib

It would seem that, despite the opportunity to sit back and relax, play your favourite sport or see the latest film release at the cinema, for some Crown Hills students holidays are still a time to be involved at college. Here we see a group of college students receiving their winners’ prizes for the Library Holiday Competition from College Librarian, Mrs. Joyce Woodcock who said, “Some of the children get bored during holidays and this was an opportunity for them to do something creative with a free choice of subject in either poetry or prose.” The winning entries can be seen displayed in the college library.
