Preparing for the Assessments

• Will my child get any revision guides/books? Will they be given resources to revise with?

Many subjects will provide students with knowledge organisers and materials ready for the assessments. In addition they are also being taught how to use revision techniques which are available on the school website under ‘student revision’.

• Can I have a copy of timetable of the assessments?

Students will be given a calendar with all the assessment dates which they can then use to plan their revision. Parents / carers will also receive the calendar of dates and they will be available on the college website.

• Can students revise at school?

We have a homework club / study space available to students Tuesday – Friday until 3.45pm. Any student can attend.

Format of the Assessments

• What exactly is my child being assessed on?

These assessments have / will include questions from any part of the curriculum that has been taught from their very first day in Y7, up to the lesson before their assessment. Subjects are assessing the key knowledge within their curriculum. However, students are not asked questions on everything they have covered. The assessments are 40 minutes in duration so there is not enough time to assess everything in this way.

• Why is my child doing assessments like this?

We want students to be able to remember the key knowledge they learn over their time at Crown Hills. We also want students to experience assessments under test conditions to allow them to achieve success when they get to GCSE age when they have to sit public examinations.

• How often will my child be tested in this way?

Once per year in each subject. As a college we do not believe in over testing therefore they don’t happen often. Class teacher assess frequently your child within lessons using low stakes, informal assessments to monitor their progress as well as other work such as homework and classwork.

• What happens if my child is absent for an assessment?

Students will be given the opportunity to sit the assessment as soon as they return to college.

After the assessment

Will parents / carers get the results?

No. This assessment, alongside other class work and homework contributes to a teacher’s judgement on whether your child is making progress. We therefore do not put too much emphasis on this result. Students will be provided with their mark / percentage but as teachers, we focus more on identifying gaps through regular testing as opposed to the result from this assessment.

Will the assessments effect their sets?

They could do but the class teacher would also use other information (including quality of classwork, homework and other tests) to move students sets.
